With this enhanced understanding, ICBC is committed to making meaningful changes to better support Indigenous Peoples within our organization. To further this important work, our Road Safety team is evolving and expanding. As part of this growth, we are currently seeking an Indigenous Road Safety Engineer to join our team. Ideally, the professional will be an experienced engineer of Indigenous heritage and with lived experience and expertise in designing and implementing Road Safety programs specifically for Indigenous communities.
We’re driven to ensure the well-being of drivers. We’re working to keep rates low as possible, delivering excellent service consistently, and proactively partnering to reduce crashes and loss.
Are you passionate about working with government, road authorities, industry and other road safety partners to creatively address road risks? If so, our Road Safety team has an opportunity for you on the Roads Portfolio.
You will have experience leading road safety projects and initiatives including identifying road safety problems, developing road safety solutions, and assisting in the management of implementing road improvement deliverables.
Your engineering experience, technical ability, commitment to effective partnerships, and a passion to improve road safety are required for the position of Road Safety Engineer.
Position requirements
Professional designation in Engineering, registered (or ability to register) with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in Transportation Engineering, with a minimum of 3 years of concentrated experience in Road Safety Engineering.
Experience and knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts, and practices in Transportation Engineering.
Experience and knowledge of municipal Traffic Engineering practices, processes, and constraints.
Experience and knowledge of the best practices, processes, trends and developments within Road Safety Engineering and Project Management.
Experience and knowledge of Road Safety Engineering programming and strategies, including the linkages education and enforcement safety programs.
Prior experience in Road Safety Engineering, specifically supporting Indigenous communities.
Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and issues.
Ability to build strong relationships and trust with Indigenous communities.
The successful candidate must be a self-starter that can work independently with minimal supervision, and able to work within a high-functioning environment.
The position requires someone who is able to travel to remote regions of the province for sustained periods (typically less than a week at a time). A valid class 5 driver’s license is required.

Work arrangements defined:
Mobile – you will work a significant amount of time in the field, in addition to working from an office and optionally working remotely within British Columbia.
Travel – you will be required to travel to remote parts of the province to visit Indigenous and small communities to explore road safety needs. This travel will often be alone, or at times with others from ICBC.
